Hi! My name is Tony Gambino. I'm a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV). I taught school from 1979-1982 in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I've worked on international issues pretty much ever since. I think there needs to be a lot more support to help poor people overseas - and that those of us who are part of the Peace Corps community should help lead this. Talking about how we can do that is the purpose of this blog.

SO LET'S DO MORE, PART II:
New Chance to Help Make Your Idea Become Real
Act Soon, Deadline is APRIL 30!!!

In the first entry to this blog, I said this about the RPCVs PROJECT! idea:

"The promise of this endeavor, once it takes hold, is to expand the number of PROJECTs, so that some day, and I hope soon, a project you like from YOUR country of service also will be on the site. "

That time has already come:

Do you have an idea that you believe in and you wish you could find a way to raise the funds to support it? Until now, you had to go through the process of creating an official charitable organization (a "501(c)(3)" organization) so that any donations would be tax deductible.

NO MORE!!! Now, the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) and GlobalGiving have launched a competition to choose worthy projects and post them on the dynamic GlobalGiving website (www.globalgiving.com).

If you are a member of NPCA and/or a leader of an NPCA affiliate group, you are eligible for this competition. Winning projects will be posted on the GlobalGiving/NPCA site, making it MUCH easier for people to contribute. When people contribute through the GlobalGiving site, they get to deduct it on their taxes.

Hi! My name is Tony Gambino. I'm a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV). I taught school for 3 years in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I've worked on international issues since, with NGOs, USAID, the Department of State, and the Congress along the way. I think there needs to be a lot more support led by those of us who are RPCVs to help poor people overseas. Talking about that is the purpose of this blog. The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) is in a partnership with GlobalGiving to give RPCVs a way both to contribute to projects supported by other RPCVs and, over time, to post projects of their own. This is an incredibly exciting new -- and much easier -- way for many more of us to contribute directly to helping people help themselves in developing countries. By the way, the picture is of me in the Congo in July 2006, serving as an elections monitor. I was in eastern Congo, mainly based in Goma. This is a picture of me there, with Goma's volcano, Mount Nyiragongo, in the background. I went with the Carter Center to observe the first democratic elections in the Congo since the early 1960s.
